Emissions Repairs

Dulles Auto Clinic specializes in hard to fix emissions problems. Unlike most cars built before 1996 cars today have complex on-board diagnostic (OBD) computer systems that are designed to reduce the amount of emissions that leave your vehicle's tailpipe. In addition to direct measurements of HC (Hydrocarbon), CO (Carbon monoxide) and NOx (nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide), we employ the latest OBD analyzers to correctly diagnose and repair your vehicle.

A little history...

The first practical piston chambered four stroke internal combustion engine, which almost all vehicles including hybrids use, was the invention of Nikolaus Otto in 1891. Since it's invention pollutants generated by this type of engine have changed very little. However since the late 1960's various components have been added to the intake and exhaust to recycle and eliminate these pollutants:

  • Thermactic Air Cleaner, (a.k.a. heated air intake)
  • Catalytic Converter
  • EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation)
  • Evaporative Emissions Control System

These elements were designed to operate on independent of modern computers that, through a variety of sensors, constantly monitor and re-adjust your engine's fuel-air mixture. Here is a list of various Emissions Control components we commonly replace when performing emissions system repairs:

  • Fuel Injectors
  • Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valves
  • Idle Air Control (IAC) Valves
  • Oxygen (O2) Sensors
  • Throttle Position (TP) Sensors
  • Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensors
  • Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensors
  • Engine, Transmission, Powertrain, Body, and Vehicle Control Modules

So, if you have the time to learn about all these systems, and wish to fix the problem on your own, you will first need to do the following:

  • Purchase automotive tools
  • Purchase automotive diagnostic computers
  • Obtain the appropriate certifications (available at your local college)
  • Bust a few knuckles

Save yourself the trouble and have our ASE Certified mechanics quickly diagnose and fix your vehicle emissions problems today!
